Visual description (draft): The film alternates between Dr. Tanya Wylde speaking to the camera and scenes of driving, arriving at a clinic, family photographs, children, cycling, food preparation and walking together. A title card identifies “Dr. Tanya Wylde, Naturopathic Doctor”. An on-screen message in the original recording reads: “13% of all Canadians currently live with Alzheimer’s or dementia. 100% wish they weren’t a burden to their family.” This is text from the original film, not a newly verified statistic. Closing cards show the Dr. Tanya Wylde naturopathic doctor logo, WyldeNaturalHealthTeam.com and a production credit for FreightTrain.ca.

Spoken words:

What makes me get out of bed in the morning is really having connection with my patients and making an impact in their lives and having them feel heard. Even if it's a small lifestyle change, it's gonna make them have bigger changes, bigger impact over the long term.

I feel like the first time I experienced empathy was when I was around the age of three and my mom was taking care of my sister because she used to get reoccurring bronchitis.

As a child, just being able to appreciate my mom's efforts and her energy into us even when she was a single mom.

At the age of seven, I wrote a really special letter to my mom.

I get emotional talking about it because she's 78 now, today actually, and it's her birthday and she has Alzheimer's.

My mother would use herbs from the garden, so peppermint to soothe our tummies or lavender when we couldn't sleep up underneath our pillows.

Now then being able to pass that on, that feeling of being able to give that energy back to my patients, but also being a mom and being able to share that with my own children and feeling that energy from them, too.

So my first naturopathic doctor was Dr. John McClean, and he was one of the… he was a part of the first graduating class of Canadian College of Naturopathic Medical Doctors.

I've been in clinical practice since 2005, so about 15 years, and I have had a very busy practice. I'm very grateful for that.

I get a lot of referrals from touching a lot of people's lives, which is a huge gift to me to see that somebody else has been affected in a positive way and then refers, and I would say that I've treated thousands of patients over the years.

I want people to know that we use evidence-based medicine. We don't just use what you might find on Dr. Google.

What we want to do is use lifestyle medicine, so exercise, sleep, nutrition, and mental health support, mindfulness. Those are the four pillars, the grassroots basics, that everyone can benefit from, and a lot of people don't have a grasp of them.

So one of the things I really enjoy helping women achieve is their best weight, because, first of all, they're so hard on themselves, but also when they do achieve their best weight, depending on what cycle of life they're in, the before and afters are one of the most… the things that… one of the things that drives me to come to work every day.

But I always try to silver lining everything in my life, and I feel like it made me a better naturopathic doctor. It made me be able to help other people at such a deeper level of empathy, understanding what they are truly going through.
