Liver Detox

There are many environmental pollutants in our environment.  They can be found in our cosmetics, what we eat, drink and breathe.  Long-term exposure to these substances has been linked with poor health and undesired side effects.  Under normal circumstances, our bodies can filter out harmful chemicals and pollutants to protect against their negative effects.  Sometimes however, the volume of exposure can overburden these natural processes and allow some of these substances to accumulate. Nutrient-deficient diets and heavy consumption of refined foods can further aggravate.

The body’s natural cleansing process primarily involves the liver, digestive tract, lungs, and kidneys.  “Environmental overload” or lack of nutrients to fuel necessary detoxification activities may also prevent harmful, compounds leaving the body. Over time, this may influence the way you feel.

A liver detoxification gives you the opportunity to make changes in your life (environmental and dietary) to give your body and liver a break.   The goal is to avoid inflammatory substances, such as cigarette smoke, caffeine, alcohol, refined foods, gluten, dairy, sugar, self prescribed medications & un-natural cleaning agents (used on your body and in your home).  A liver detox does not actually detoxify your liver per se, but it does support and optimize the functioning of this multi-tasking, critical organ.  A liver detox supports the liver by improving it’s ability to detoxify oxidants and endogenous chemicals from your body.  The liver generates anti-oxidants such as glutathione and the role of a liver detoxification is to give the liver a break from substances and foods that use up those anti-oxidants too quickly.  A liver detoxification also helps the liver create more anti-oxidants to bind and eliminate waste and toxins (aka oxidants) from the body.   Foods and substances that generate inflammation also create oxidative stress so by avoiding them and loading up your body with the right nutrients (nutritious foods, supplements and detox drinks) you are able to support your liver.   Dr. Wylde recommends her patients do a four-week “liver-detox” with every change of season (January (after the holidays), end of March, end of June and end of September) to get back on track with a super clean and healthy lifestyle.  Although this is what we recommend, a liver detox can be done at anytime and can benefit most adults as long as it is done properly and with the right guidance.   Some patients may require long term liver support depending on the nature of their ailments and health concerns.  Ask Dr. Wylde about customizing a liver-detoxification protocol for you!
